Knowledge of the English language is crucial in the immigration process for most applicants seeking to move to Australia. Only citizens of
English-speaking countries (USA, UK, Canada, Ireland, and New Zealand) are exempt from taking an English test. Their citizenship is seen as
meeting the minimum requirement (a minimum of 6 points in each module), for which no additional points are given in the points test.
Additional points are available for different levels of English language proficiency as follows:
- Equivalent to IELTS 6 – 0 points
- Equivalent to IELTS 7 – 10 points
- Equivalent to IELTS 8 – 20 points
The Department of Immigration of Australia accepts various English language tests, including IELTS, TOEFL iBT, OET, PTE Academic, and
Cambridge C1 Academy. To understand the specific requirements for each test, individuals can visit the Department’s website.
